Julija Mostykanova
I came to the United States in 2001 from Lithuania after studying the design and technology of polymers at Kaunas University of Technology. Then, I found my way to Nantucket Island, where I fell in love with its natural beauty. I’m lucky to call it my home.
My painting journey began in the winter of 2003 when I saw an ad in the local paper for art classes at the Nantucket Artist Association. I began to take classes, and I was hooked. Without formal art training, this modest beginning ultimately changed my life. Throughout my career, I have traveled extensively and learned from many valuable teachers and mentors through classes, workshops, and fellowships. I have been painting full-time since 2010.
The island, my surroundings, and my life experiences inspire me. As my personal life evolves and I raise a family in Nantucket, so does my work. Recently, my journey into abstraction has allowed me to be challenged and excited for the next phase of my career. I find non-representational painting the most challenging for me. When creating my work, I respond to the paint itself and I leave the literal behind. As my abstract work evolves, I revisit my earlier styles and let them influence each other.
